some good bigger-picture general comments re: precious metals and “monetary inflation” are made.

short term i expect  a correction in gold stocks.  right now everyone is ga-ga over gold but short term it is likely overdone and there could […]

John Zechner’s comments on energy, nat gas, crude oil

“market call tonite”
http://watch.bnn.ca/#clip135928

gold and energy stocks tend to run counter to one another
if so, HOU and HEU are current buys, and HGU is a “lighten up” or sell.
I don’t think i’d have the guts to be shorting gold via HGD, but the next three months
should prove strong for HOU and HEU.

come spring a rotation from […]

HEU, a stab at it`s next interim high

from looking at charts, dates for the past (technical) highs for HEU:
may 21st
Aug 28th

with interim lows at jul8th and oct 16th

adding the dates and days in between up………………………….
we are looking at about a 14 week cycle with about equal lengths of time from peak to trough and return.

this is about 3 and half months.  useful […]

Dry-shipping companies and the ETF

kevin o’leary is one very smart man and a billionaire also.

he has loved the shipping industry for a long time (ocean-going cargo ships that transport goods from one continent to another) and he owns a lot of stock in these companies.

The long-term case for oil

oil is currently undergoing a massive correction following the parabolic run-up in the first half of 2008.
books will be written about this runup for the next century.

however, the current correction will take several more months to itself out. there will be three legs down and we have just finished leg number one.

From Levi Folk’s comment in […]

Natural Gas and HNU

nat gas appears to bottoming in the $6-6.50 range. currently it closed at $6.78 for december contracts the best way to play natural gas is with HNU.

looking at the charts of HNU, it appears that it is bottoming in the $7.25-7.50 range.
it closed halloween at 8.37. somewhere this november, gas and by extension HNU will likely bottom.
I am looking […]

Oil to bottom at $48US in spring 2009

last week at a course in montreal, I heard a real-world trader from france predicting that the price of oil would bottom at $48US.

here is a recent article where a scotiabank analyst says the $60US level is the “bottom”

she is going to be proven wrong.  $60 might be the average price over the next 6-9 […]

HOD in the low $11s

As a technician, i look at charts, graphs, and squigly lines. If you draw a line and connect the dots on a three-month chart going back to Canada Day. You will connect the jul14th, aug 26-28th and sept 21-25th lows of HOD the line is trending upwards, and technicians refer to this as “support”, or […]

A contrarian gets the last laugh

Some people have actually *made* money during this market “correction”. It seems that everyone going defensive has moved some % of their money into gold I suggest you do, also from today’s Globe and Mail, page B2.
It seems odd that “fewer than a dozen of the 1,172 Canadian equity funds…have made money in the previous 30 […]

One more opinion on gold

Just like the Canucks. Everyone likes a winner, and everyone likes a bandwagon.
http://www.gold-eagle.com/editorials_08/field091808.html
Having said that, the time may be ripe for a sustained move upwards in gold over the next 2-3 months. Seasonally it is usually strong from about late july till Dec-Jan I entered a small position in a gold ETF in late july […]
